Book description

The Light That Failed is a one-volume novel by the English writer Rudyard Kipling, published in 1891. This is the first novel by Rudyard Kipling, written when he was 26 years old. Also, this novel is semi-autobiographical, as it was based on Kipling's own unrequited love for Florence Garrard. The novel tells the story of the life of Dick Heldar - an artist who went blind. The novel also tells the story of Dick's unrequited love for Maisie, his childhood friend. Most of the novel takes place in September in London, but many important events, military campaigns unfold in Sudan and Egypt, especially in Port Said and Suakin. For example, the Mahdist War is the place of Dick's first encounter with Torpenhow and his subsequent death during the Anglo-Egyptian reconquest of Sudan.
