Hausa Grammar With Exercises, Readings, And Vocabularies – written by Charles Henry Robinson and John Alder Burdon and published in 1905. Charles Henry Robinson was a scholar, lecturer in Hausa in the University of Cambridge. He published some books on the language, literature and culture of the Hausa people in West Africa. John Alder Burdon, formerly Hausa scholar of Christ's college, Cambridge, resident of Sokoto Province, N. Nigeria. Hausa is the largest native language of the Chadic language family. It is widespread in West Africa and is widely used as a language of interethnic communication, especially among Muslims. This book is the second revised edition. The first edition was published in 1897. This grammar is mainly intended for use by officers and civil servants who begin learning the language, every effort has been made to make it as simple as possible, and a key is included with the exercises so that the student, without a teacher, can correct their own mistakes. For the same reason, the first half of the Grammar was printed in Latin letters, and the second half was printed in Latin letters, as well as in Hausa letters. Thus, it is possible to read in its entirety without acquiring knowledge of the written language, although the latter is highly recommended for serious language learners.
