Book description

Aw-aw-tam Indian nights - is a collection of the myths and legends of the Pimas of Arizona, as received by J. William Lloyd from Comalk-Hawk-Kih (Thin Buckskin) thru the interpretation of Edward Hubert Wood, which was published in 1911. J. William Lloyd was an American individualist anarchist, pantheist and mystic. Edward Hubert Wood was a purebred Pima educated in Albuquerque, New Mexico. J. William Lloyd and Edward Hubert Wood were friends and corresponded. It was through correspondence that J. William Lloyd learned that one of his Indian friend's dreams was that he be a means of preserving the ancient tales of his people. He had a great aunt, Comalk-Hawk-Kih, or Thin Buckskin, who was a see-nee-yaw-kum, or a professional traditionalist who knew all the ancient stones, but had no successor, and with whose death the stories will disappear. He did not feel able to present these traditions in good English and therefore did not know what to do. They discussed the matter in letters; and finally it was decided that J. William Lloyd should visit the Gila River Reservation in Arizona, where the Pimas lived, and personally obtain the myths from the old seeneeyawkum, and Mr. Wood should return home and be the host and interpreter. Edward Hubert Wood has confirmed that the myths and legends of the Pimas borrowed by J. William Lloyd from his great uncle, Thin Buckskin, in his interpretation are correct and authentic, as far as he could interpret them.
