Thomas Crane


Thomas Crane (1808 to 1859) was an English portrait painter who was born into the family of a bookseller in Chester. In 1824 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts school in London, and had his first exhibition at the Liverpool Academy of Arts in 1832. Crane was elected a full member of the Academy in 1838, and the following year married and returned to London. In 1841 he became the treasurer of the Academy in Liverpool, but returned to London in 1857, where he died in July 1859. His progeny became writers, art critic, and illustrators.
