C. J. Maynard


Charles Johnson Maynard (1845 to 1929) was a US naturalist and ornithologistwho was born in Newton, Mass. who was also a collector, taxidermist, and expert on bird vocals. As well as studying birds he investigated mollusks, tombstones moss and insects. Leaving school aged 16 to help on the family farm his interests turned to taxidermy, aand collecting natural science specimens. In 1865, he founded his own company called C. J. Maynard & Co., which published books and sold natural science materials. In May of 1870, when he was 24 he published "Maynard's Guide to the Naturalist" which was America's first publication that provided a reliable guide to the collection and preservation of zoological samples. It was illustrated by renowned artist Edwin Lord Wicks and was published by James R. Osgood & Co.
