Book description

Frances R. Donovan was born in 1885 in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of Richard Donovan, who was a lawyer and politician. Her mother was active in several organizations including the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the Woman’s Club of Chicago. The main theme of her book is the struggle of women working in restaurants against male domination. In general, this topic is common for all feminist literature from this period. However, Donovan’s work differs from others by its special approach to this issue. In particular, she shows how difficult it is for a woman to find freedom under conditions of oppression by men. It should be noted that before Donovan’s book such topics were not widely discussed or presented in literature in such detail
