Book description

The sacred beetle: a popular treatise on Egyptian scarabs in art and history – is a book, which was published in 1902 and written by John, Belfast entrepreneur, artist, writer, collector and Egyptologist. During many travels along the Nile, the author collected a collection of several hundred scarabs and cylinders, which were systematized, transliterated and translated from time to time. The author preferred to obtain his illustrations with the help of photography in order to reproduce the actual marks on the face and the shape of the subject itself. From the image of the real scarab, experts can guess the true meaning of the signs. The scarabs on the earlier plates are arranged as chronologically as possible. At present, scarabs are of paramount importance for establishing the chronological periods of Egyptian history. Every museum of such antiquities should now have its own scarab cabinet. This edition is supplemented with wonderful photographs and illustrations.
