The Highland Clearances were historical events that were the ejections of a large number of tenants in the Scottish Highlands and Scottish Islands, mostly in the period 1750 to 1860.
These clearances were condemned by many writers at the time, and in the late 19th century they were referred to as against landlord tenure and calls for land reform related to agriculture.
A particularly well-known example is Alexander Mackenzie's 1883 History of the Highland Clearing.
This book tells about one of the sad periods of Scottish history.
