Book description

The author saw fit to state that this sermon was preached at Wibsey Chapel, Bradford, Yorkshire on February 8, 1852. It was the first Sunday after the Holmfirth Catastrophe and the sermon was written without the slightest mention of the thought that it would ever go beyond the narrow circle of his own flock. This preaching does not pretend to be an originality of thought or a method of treatment. This sermon is being published at the request of a gentleman who wishes to contribute any profit that may arise from a sale to the Holmfirth Aid Fund. Holmfirth floods refer to a series of severe floods in Holm Valley, West Yorkshire, England, affecting Holmfirth and other settlements in the valley. The worst flood occurred in the early morning of February 5, 1852, when the embankment of the Bilberry Reservoir collapsed, killing 81 people. This flood ranked 23rd in the world in terms of the number of fatalities due to floods and landslides in the history of mankind.
