About the Book

The northwestern shores of the Gali Sea were in the time of our Lord the abode of a large and busy population. Nine cities, including Tiberias, are said to have bordered the now secluded lake; while the fertile plain of Gennisaret and the highlands beyond were filled with cities and villages. Joseph, a Jewish historian, in a description that is probably somewhat overstated, states that even the small towns of the region had fifteen thousand inhabitants, and modern authors have found the closest parallel to this part of Palestine in the industrial regions of England. Fishing on the lake, as well as cultivating the valleys, provided lucrative jobs for thousands; and flotillas of ships, large and small, anchored in bays or raced over the waters.
