Poems, Scots and English

Poems: Scots and English – is a poetry collection, which was published in 1917 and written by John Buchan. John Buchan, 1st Baron of Tweedsmuir was a British statesman, publisher and writer, fifteenth Governor General of Canada from 1935 to 1940, author of novels, in particular "39 steps". Since there are many varieties of Northern English, it seems appropriate to say that the works of the Scots in this small collection are written in a language spoken in the highlands of the lowlands, from the Cheviots to the Galloway. Scottish has never been a bookish language for the author. According to John Buchan, it was always easier for him to speak it than to write it. The author hoped that the shortcomings of his poems, no matter how great they were, were not the shortcomings of the antiquarian exercise. The publication is conditionally divided into two "Books". Book I is dedicated to "Scots", which includes two sections such as “Theocritus In Scots” and “Inter Arma”, and Book II is "English" poetry.
