On the Seaboard; A Novel of the Baltic Islands. [Cincinnati-1913]

On the seaboard – is a novel written by August Strindberg, Swedish writer and publicist. He was the founder of modern Swedish literature and theater. The Fisheries Superintendent is visiting the islands near Stockholm. For a long time, the islands have been fishing for strömming - Baltic herring, and now the fish is gone. Superintendent - Axel Borg - came to sort it out on the spot and give recommendations to the local population how not to die of hunger. The first half of the book is a description of the magnificent Swedish nature and a ton of knowledge in botany and zoology. But in general, the book is not about that. Borg, who grew up without a mother, was completely a man of mind, as Prospero not only knew all the laws of nature, but could also control the elements to some extent (in fact, he took advantage of the situation to play a performance with the help of the forces of nature). He considers himself to be reasonable alone, and therefore above all others, calls the inhabitants of the islands savages, although, incidentally, they are. He relies only on logic, because emotions are practically inaccessible to him. This is a deep philosophical novel about mind versus feelings.
