Book description

Kyng Johan is a 16th century English play. The play was written by John Bale in 1538 and significantly revised during the reign of Elizabeth I. John Bale was a bishop who supported Henry VIII's church reform policy, an English playwright and antiquary. The play was groundbreaking as it was the first English-language play in which the historical English monarch was portrayed as a virtuous character. The play, considered part of Protestant propaganda, told the story of John of England, who ruled in the 13th century in England. King John is presented as a champion of the English church rites, in contrast to the Catholic pope. The text of this play was edited by John Payne Collier, an English Shakespearean critic and forger, for the Camden Society. This book was published in 1838.
