Footprints of statesmen during the eighteenth century in England – is a book which was published in 1892 and written by Reginald Baliol Brett, 2nd Viscount Esher. He was a historian and liberal politician in the United Kingdom. In spite of this, his greatest influence on military and foreign affairs was as a courtier, a member of public committees and a behind-the-scenes "fixer", or rather, a gray eminence. The following pages do not claim to contain anything new and do not attempt to rise to historical dignity. They were written for the amusement of a friend, in the hope that they might stimulate rather than satisfy curiosity. They record some of the impressions that a long contemplation of the 18th century in connection with the days in which they lived, left in the mind of the author.
