Book description

Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush - is a collection of short stories by Ian McLaren published in 1895. Ian McLaren (real name John Watson) was a minister of the Free Church of Scotland. He is remembered as an author of fiction. This collection became an extremely popular bestseller. It is considered part of the Kailyard School of Scottish Literature. Kailyard or kailyaird (cabbage) is comparable to a cabbage patch and refers to a vegetable garden that can be found next to a cottage. The title of this collection refers to the Jacobite song "There grows a bonnie brier bush in our Kailyard". The stories in this book recount some of McLaren's experiences as a Free Church minister in rural Perthshire and combine pathos and humor with colorful Scottish dialogue. McLaren also mentions the forest of Drumtochty in the book.
