Book description

The author of the essay "Ancient Astronomy, Modern Science and Sacred Cosmology" was a student of astronomy and physics, who had worked for many years on the subject of electricity. He also studied the writings of many authors, especially those associated with the subject of electricity. In this essay, he explains how ancient astronomers understood physical electricity and how they used it in their observations. The main argument of this essay begins with a summary of the astronomy of the aforementioned years. Many of the observations presented in astronomy, especially in its ancient history, were based on the astronomical lectures of Professor Mitchell of Cincinnati. Ancient astronomy, modern science, and sacred cosmology – is a book that was published in 1882 and written by John Wood. The present Essay may perhaps be recognized as an amplification of the argument of an earlier one, “Bible Anticipations of Modern Science.” In treating of Sacred Cosmology, the Author, it will be seen, has made his own application of Physical Electricity, in its more modern development; as especially illustrated in a recent Faraday Lecture, by that pre-eminent master of Natural Science, the learned Dr. Helmholtz, of Berlin. In many of his observations on Astronomy also, particularly on its ancient history, the Author has gladly availed himself of the Astronomical Lectures of Professor Mitchell, of Cincinnati; which had subsequently appeared in this country, in a volume of rare merit and interest, entitled “The Orbs of Heaven.” In the following inquiry, it may here be proper to apprise the reader, that the Author's main argument commences with the summary of Modern Astronomy; and is continued through the subsequent Parts or Chapters of the Treatise. This book consists of four parts: Ancient Astronomy; Modern Astronomy; The Fundamental Principle of the Modern System, compromised by recent Scientific Discovery; Review of Certain Salient Points of this Investigation.
