This little treatise claims to be a textbook and textbook on the art of textual criticism, not science. Its purpose will be achieved if the reader is prepared with its help to apply art to ordinary processes and begin to study science in books such as Dr. Hort's “Introduction” and Dr. Gregory's “Prolegomena” to Tischendorf's eighth edition. In such a primary treatise, where no claims of originality are made, it is hardly possible to recognize obligations in relation to previous works. The author hopes that his general recognition that he used whatever he could get his hands on, which served his purpose, will be considered sufficient recognition of the many debts that he knows about, and would like, if there was a reason, to confess in detail.
