An Iceland fisherman

The Icelandic Fisherman (fr. Pêcheur d'Islande) is a novel by the French writer Pierre Loti, published in 1886. It is considered one of the most successful works of the writer. The action takes place in Brittany, in the city of Paimpol, as well as on ships off the coast of Iceland. The background is the life of the "Icelanders" - the Breton fishermen who go to sea for fish every year - and their families: the winter holidays give way to the anticipation and anxiety of summer. The novel is dedicated to the love story of the Breton woman Gaud Mével for the fisherman Yann Gaos. She is a relatively wealthy heiress who spent part of her life in Paris - at first rejected by Jan, a poor fisherman who lives with his parents and makes a living by going for several months to the dangerous shores of Iceland to catch cod every spring. This book was published in 1913 and translated from the French by Anna Farwell De Koven. She was an American novelist, socialite and historian.
