A Compendious Grammar of the Old Northern Or Icelandic Language – is a work written by George Perkins Marsh and published in 1838.
Marsh is the author of many works in philology (he himself spoke a number of European languages), including the grammar of the Icelandic language, which was his main area of scientific interests.
This book is a concise grammar of the Icelandic language.
The basis of this book consisted of three sources.
The first of these is the earliest grammar of the language, which claims to be complete and, although inferior to the later grammars of the same author, is a very studied and philosophical work.
The second is an enlarged and greatly improved Swedish edition of the first.
The third is mainly intended to demonstrate the author's mature views on the ancient grammatical forms of the language, collected from his earliest written records.
