Iles, George was born on June 20, 1852 in Gilbraltar. Son of Frederick and Susannah (Vonberg) Iles. Education common schools Montreal. Doctor of Laws, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, 1928. Unmarried. Resided Montreal, 1857-1887. Since then in New New York Has advocated for 35 years “the appraisal of literature” by engaging most trustworthy authorities to choose the best books and say about each the word of description and criticism most helpful to readers and students. To his end edited (with Railroad Bowker, for Society for Political Education): The Reader’s Guide on Economic, social and Political Science, 1891. (with Mistress Augusta H. Leypoldt) A List of Books for Girls and Women and Their Clubs, 1895, for American Library Association. A Bibleography of Fine Art (Russell Sturgis and H. East. Krehbiel, contributors), 1897, for American Library Association Gave $10,000 to American Library Association for cost of Guide to American History, 4,100 works chosen and appraised by 40 critics, 1902.
