George Bancroft


George Bancroft (1800 to1891) was a US historian and statesman prominent as a promoter of secondary education in his home state and at national and international levels. While U.S. Secretary of the Navy, in 1845 he established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, and was also a senior US diplomat in Europe. Among his best-known work is History of the United States, from the Discovery of the American Continent.
